GDPR, user data and privacy protection

We focus on respecting the user's right to privacy and avoid embedding third-party scripts, third-party fonts and third-party cookies as much as possible. Fonts are always embedded directly in the theme (as files) and the same for third-party scripts, like Bootstrap in a theme where the Bootstrap library is embedded in the theme.

You can see which third-party scripts a website is bringing in from the outside with the Firefox extension uBlock Origin (also available for Chrome).

Benefits of using a strategy that minimizes the use of third-party cookies, scripts and fonts:

  • User's right to privacy is respected
  • No dependency on a third-party service being available
  • Any GDPR warnings become clearer, or become completely redundant

Matomo, GDPR-friendly service for user data

After the announcements from the European Data Protection Board (EDPB) about data transfers to third countries and from the Danish Data Protection Agency that Google Analytics is illegal to use in Denmark, you should switch to a GDPR-friendly alternative like Matomo, where collected user data can be kept in-house and not shared with third parties.

We can help you integrate Matomo on your website and install Matomo on your own server. It is possible to import user data from Google Analytics to Matomo via their Google Analytics Importer, so all the data you have built up is not lost when switching from Google Analytics. Note: The old Google Analytics will close July 2023, and data cannot be migrated from the old GA to GA4, so data from the old GA that closes July 2023 should be transferred before then. See also:

Campaigns in Matomo

As in other Analytics tools, it is possible to create campaigns in Matomo to track the effectiveness of different channels, or if you want to do A/B testing on variations of design and text layout. An example of a campaign URL:

https://ardea.dk/gdpr?mtm_campaign=2022-feb-info&mtm_kwd=gdpr&mtm_source=nyhedsbrev&mtm_medium=email&mtm_content=variant-a

The individual parts in reader-friendly format:
Campaign: 2022-feb-info
Keywords: gdpr
Source: newsletter
Medium: email
A/B testing: variant-a

Embedding fonts in your website theme

In a ruling from a Munich court January 2022, it was stated that there is no legitimate reason to use Google Fonts as third-party fonts. We can help you embed fonts directly into your website's theme while respecting your users' right to privacy.
